Module 3: Chemical patterns

Return to GCSE Science

You should be able to (higher tier in bold):
recall the formulae of elements and simple compounds in the module
represent chemical reactions by word equations; write simple balanced equations and use state symbols (s), (l), (g) and (aq)
write balanced equations to describe and explain a wide range of reactions including ionic equations

The structure of atoms
You
should be able to:
C3.01 describe the structure of an atom as a nucleus containing protons and neutrons, surrounded by orbiting electrons arranged in shells

Elements and the periodic table
You should be able to:
C3.02 recall that there are approximately 100 elements in the periodic table arranged in order of increasing
atomic number and recall that elements are the building blocks of all materials
C3.03 recall the position of metals and non-metals in the periodic table
C3.04 locate the positions in the periodic table of the alkali metals (group 1), the halogens (group 7), the
noble gases (group 0)
C3.05 understand how the electron shell are filled in the atoms of the first twenty elements in the periodic table
C3.06 understand the connection between the number of outer electrons and the position of an element in a group in the periodic table
C3.07 understand that the reactions of elements depend upon the arrangement of
electrons in their atoms
C3.08 recall that there is a gradual change in the properties of the elements from the
top to the bottom of each group
C3.09 understand that elements in the same group of the periodic table have similar chemical properties, for example by the halogens

The properties of halogens
You should be able to:
C3.10 recall that fluorine, chlorine, bromine, and iodine are halogens
C3.11 recall the colours, the trend in boiling points and the physical states of the halogens at room temperature
C3.12 describe the reactions of chlorine with sodium and iron
C3.13 describe the change in  reactivity of the halogens with increasing atomic number, as shown by their displacement reactions with solutions of other halides
C3.14 describe the uses of chlorine
in water purification and bleaching
C3.15 recall the use of iodine solution as an antiseptic

Rates of reaction
You should be able to:
C3.16 recall that there is a great variation in the rates at which different reactions take place
C3.17 understand that the rate of chemical reaction increases if
the temperature is increased
the concentration of reactant is increased
the surface area of a solid reactant is increased
a catalyst is used
C3.18 describe experiments to investigate the above effects
C3.19 understand that reactions occur when particles collide
C3.20 understand that the rate of a reaction is increased by
increased frequency of the collisions
greater energy of the collisions
C3.21 describe how the rates of enzyme catalysed reactions vary with temperature and pH
