The Induction Year

Aims:

1. To identify important issues for consideration in preparation for the induction year.
2. To identify sources of information to support work in the induction year.

Introduction

This session has been organised as a guided web based search through the essential features of the first year in teaching.  Each web link has some associated questions to focus attention on important issues.  There will however be a range of other issues which are important to you on which you may wish to spend some time.

Induction for newly qualified teachers

Each school receives over £1000 to fund a programme for each NQT.  To what are you entitled as an NQT?
At Kingsbury there is a 40 period taught fortnight.  How many periods would it be reasonable for an NQT to teach during a fortnight?

Induction for newly qualified teachers (NQTs) follows initial teacher training, the foundation for continuing professional development.

The DfES introduced a compulsory period of induction for NQTs in September 1999. The induction period must be undertaken by NQTs who wish to work in maintained schools and non-maintained special schools.

The induction period may also be taken while working in city technology colleges, independent schools and, since September 2000, in sixth form colleges. It will also be possible to undertake induction while working in city academies.

During the induction period new teachers have to demonstrate they have continued to meet the standards of QTS, and meet all the induction standards.

NQTs have an individualised programme of support during their induction year from a designated induction tutor. This includes observation of the new teacher's teaching, watching more experienced teachers in different settings, e.g. beacon schools, and a professional review of progress at least every half term.

It is the responsibility of the head to ensure that the NQT does not teach more than 90% of a normal timetable during the period, to allow their induction to take place.

The induction period

How long does the induction period last?
Teachers who obtain Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) after 7 May 1999, by whatever route, must complete an induction period of three school terms (or equivalent) if they are to continue to work in maintained schools or in non‑maintained special schools in England. NQTs who are awarded QTS but do not satisfactorily complete a statutory induction period will not be eligible for employment as a teacher in a maintained school or non maintained special school. They will not, however, lose their QTS.

Induction combines an individualised programme of monitoring and support-providing opportunities for NQTs to enhance the knowledge and skills they developed when meeting the standards for the award of QTS — with an assessment of their performance.

The NQT essential checklist

Are you ready to start you induction year?  Print the check list and use the links for further explanation.  Complete it as far as is reasonable with items needing attention marked as "to do".
Here is a quick and easy checklist to make sure that you are eligible to start your induction support programme and that you are fully aware of your roles and responsibilities. If you respond to any points by ticking NO, refer to the relevant part of this guidance to find out what you need to do.

Any questions in italics are prerequisites i.e. if the answer is NO, you cannot start your induction, and any induction that you undertake will be invalid and have to be repeated. All other questions highlight the essential elements of a successful induction support programme.
